Best Companion for a Mesmer/Necro?
I started playing a mesmer as a lark and (OMG, I lovelovelove her!) she kicks butt. I'm really surprised that someone like me (a spell spammer who fails 50% of the time she tries to click on an enemy) can learn how to energy manage and at least attempt to target in PvE.
My question is--what's the best companion for a Mesmer/Necro? The Mister wants to quest together and we're looking to support each other. I've been using curses and domination magic to keep myself from dying too much. I get overwhelmed easily, even with henchies.
Any suggestions for matching up another profession/secondary with a mesmer/necro?

Honestly, I'd go with something opposed to a Mesmer, say a Warrior or a Dervish, for the LULZ.

To some extent it depends on which campaign you're planning on starting his character in, as if it's a different campaign to the one you've started in you'd be stuck playing separately until one of you reaches ~lvl 15 and gets to a port city to change continents so you can be together.
It also depends on your partner's playstyle preference. Does he like getting up close and personal with the enemy, does he prefer standing back and controlling the field from a distance, or does he prefer the responsibility of keeping people alive?
Ritualist is a strong and versatile profession at the moment and would work very well alongside a mesmer, either in the ranged damage/pulling role with spirits or in the support role with resto or with communing spirits. The only possible downside is that you'd need to start in factions.
If you don't fancy starting in factions I'd say either warrior or monk, depending on your partner's playstyle. If warrior, he can take the initial hits and ball up the enemies while you shut them down and hex them for him. If monk, you can carry on playing the way you've had to whilst alone with heroes and hench, but have a player backing you up to keep you alive.
To be honest though, it doesn't really matter what profession (primary or secondary) he plays. You'll figure out tactics and builds that work for you both, whichever he chooses. I'd suggest he just picks the one he likes the sound of most (or alternatively, the one he thinks looks the best ).

Tab and C are your friends for targetting foes which you should be using almost constantly.I can only assume that you are still low level and using Life Siphon merely to take pressure off your henchmen healers? This may work ok-ish now but later in the game you will suffer greatly.
As you and foes go up in level you may want to reconsider what set of skills *build* you are using so feel free to read through the general mesmer guide and go from there..
Most professions gel well together in a team format so almost anything will work
Good luck and happy hunting

I play most often on my mesmer (who is also a Me/N by the way) and a guildy of mine often plays as a N/Me. I can say that when we group up with our heroes we pretty much steamroll PvE. Casters generally work well together. Still there's room in pretty much any party (within reason) for two humans of whatever profs and the rest supplemented with heroes/henchmen. So tell your better half to just play whatever he feels like, you can still rock PvE, I promise.

When playing with a mesmer, I like running something offensive, like warrior, or assassin, or possibly para. Reason being the main difficulty I have with casters is getting aggro right. Whereas with a fighter, its actually good to have them all sitting around me.

Thank you, Calista--I've recently learned the Life Siphon lesson. I can't seem to time it enough to take heat off the healer. I switched it out for Power Leak (I know I need the better version) so I could interrupt the enemy necros that seem to target my healer. I've also been standing by her (when she holds still) and casting the AoE spell to chase enemies away.
We only have one copy of the whole trilogy and it's on his machine. I'm running just a copy of Prophecies while I prowl for sales for the other chapters. We play with our 9 year old sometimes too--he's consistently been a warrior (kids make the best aggro tanks! ). So we're all starting out in Prophecies (repeatedly--one day, we'll all get past the middle of Kryta, LOL).

Id look for the trilogy or the complete edition (Trilogy with EotN as well). These are quite often cheaper than getting 2 separate campaigns nowadays. If you add the Trilogy key to the Prophs account, you wont get a second copy of Prophs, but the other continents will unlock for you to play in.
